2004 Laraine Sangiovese

Winemaker's Notes

A number of years ago, Gerber Vineyards began shifting the emphasis of growing Chardonnay to growing red varietals. After comparing our growing season conditions to other parts of the world, we surmised that although we have cool nights due to our elevation, our warm and sometimes hot summer days may best lend themselves to varietals which are planted in the Mediterranean regions of Europe.

After further investigation of rootstocks and budwood, we planted Syrah and Sangiovese. The Syrah demonstrated its ability to produce flavorful wines early on, but having no experience making Sangiovese, we were timid to decide just how to handle it in the winery. After 2 years of selling all of the fruit, we decided to take a chance in 2004. Sangiovese, the predominant grape planted in the Tuscany region of Italy, is a major component of the Chianti wines there. Sometimes blended and other times not, the wine would best be described as a spicy Pinot Noir. Elements of spearmint and herbs complement its cherry and berry characters.

The 2004 Laraine Sangiovese is blended with small quantities of Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon to increase its color, density and structure. It is a lively wine which will accompany grilled meats and fish. I suggest you chill the wine slightly and enjoy it while cooking.
